INFORMATION ON CLINICAL SUPERVISION

I offer 1:1 and Group Based Clinical Supervision to Counselling Students, Counsellors and Psychotherapists,

within either the context of a particular organisational setting or the context of freelance practice.

Training as a counsellor:

I trained as a social worker (CQSW, Leeds University). After qualification I worked in ‘youth social work’ for 12 years, as a practitioner and from 1984, training social workers & probation officers in these skills. I trained in facilitation skills on the Diploma in Humanistic Psychology (IDHP, Leeds), before undertaking psychotherapy training with the Hakomi Institute, U.K. I completed my post qualification supervision & certification in April 1997, when I became a Certified Hakomi Therapist.

I have worked since 1988 as a voluntary & freelance counsellor and since 1994 as a freelance psychotherapist. I was a ‘full group member’ and founder member of the Independent Practitioners Network (IPN); have been a BACP Accredited Counsellor and a UKRC Registered Counsellor since 2002.

As a counsellor, psychotherapist and clinical supervisor, I work from an ‘Integrative Relational’ approach, influenced by Humanistic, Psychodynamic and Hakomi process traditions. The root of my clinical work is facilitating the creation of a balanced therapeutic environment, in which healthy relationships can grow & flourish. I encourage: personal & professional awareness; ‘dialogue & partnership’ in work with Clients; increased personal competence & the ability to make creative and powerful professional & life choices.

Training as a supervisor & current work:

I am a BACP Accredited Supervisor. Since 1984 I have been a non managerial supervisor, coach & practice consultant to practitioners within the ‘social economy’, who use group work & counselling skills with clients. I have been a professional supervisor and coach of both practitioners & managers in a wide number of ‘social economy organisations’ for over 20 years (drugs; HIV & AIDS; criminal justice; child care; community & social work; youth work; housing etc).

I have delivered clinical supervision to Counsellors in primary care, Counsellors and Psychotherapists in private practice, Practitioners in organisational settings undertaking counselling & Students in counselling training since 1988. I also co-tutor on the ‘Diploma in the Supervision of the Therapeutic Practitioner’.

APPROACH & Supervision modelS:

My approach is rooted in the core values of Humanistic Psychology: deep down where it counts, I, the Supervisee & the Client are all fundamentally ‘OK’. Essentially, my whole approach is underpinned by the notion of ‘trust’ in the Client’s own wisdom & the Counsellor’s ability to learn to facilitate client understanding of this wisdom.

In current parlance, I work as a Clinical Supervisor from the ‘Integrative and Relational Depth’ approach. I am particularly interested in helping Clinical Supervisees to recognise they are developing a Craft, rather than attempting to perfect a range of interventions as expert skill based practitioners.

I utilise both the HAWKINS & SHOHET (1989) model and the 5 stage cyclical model developed by PAGE & WOSKET (1994).

Page & Wosket: specify the working ‘contract’ for the session; identify the ‘focus’ for discussion; create ‘space’ to explore issues; build a ‘bridge’ to link exploration back to the direct client work and finally offer an opportunity to ‘review’ what has been explored and how it was explored in the session. I focus on issues of client best interest, technique and professional practice, as well as the dynamics of the counsellor-client relationship, where issues of projection, transference, counter-transference and material arising within the ‘therapeutic field’ can often be identified and explored.

Overall I advocate and uphold the ‘Primary Foci of Supervision’ as outlined by Hawkins & Shohet:

·         To provide a regular space for the Supervisee to reflect upon the ‘content & process’ of their work;

·         To develop understanding & skills within the work;

·         To receive both ‘content & process’ feedback;

·         To be validated, supported & challenged as a Counsellor or Psychotherapist;

·         To ensure that as a person & Practitioner one is not left to carry, unnecessarily, the difficulties of the work (including problems & projections) alone;

·         To have space to explore and express personal distress, restimulation, transference or counter transference that may be brought up by the work;

·         To plan & utilise  professional and personal resources better;

·         To be proactive rather than reactive;

·         And to ensure quality of the work.

I offer 1:1 Clinical Supervision on the basis of a minimum 1 ½ Hour Session every month (or its equivalent), in line with BACP requirements for Counsellors working towards BACP Accreditation or already Accredited. Supervisees carrying substantial caseloads or particularly difficult cases should expect to require & negotiate supervision contact higher than the 1 ½ hour BACP ‘baseline’. Clinical Supervision is provided at our own Clinical Practice premises in either Skipton or Silsden.   [Please contact me for further information on Group Based Clinical Supervision].

Fees:

(As from 1st October 2010) £46 per hour, (£39 per hour, students).  [Please phone for Organisational Rates].  I work to an appointment system.

Cancellations:

The sessions start at the agreed time (i.e.: if you arrive late, you get a shorter session). Let me know ASAP if you have to cancel a session. I will do likewise. Cancellations with less than 48hrs notice = ½ the fee; less than 24hrs notice = full fee. Should I have to cancel for any reason, I will endeavour to arrange another session as soon as possible.

INFORMATION ON COACHING SUPERVISION

I offer 1:1 and Group Based Coaching Supervision to Coaches,

within either the context of a particular organisational setting or the context of freelance practice.

Alongside its organisational development and training work, ‘The Phoenix Partnership’ delivers a range of 1:1 services from non managerial supervision to clinical supervision, mentoring, coaching and coaching supervision. I and my colleagues, have delivered these services to freelance and salaried practitioners, middle and senior managers in the social economy, public & commercial sectors, since 1990. I am a Co-Tutor on the ABC Accredited ‘Diploma in the Supervision of the Therapeutic Practitioner’ and have also contributed to the Association for Coaching Working Party on Coaching Supervision.

My approach is rooted in the core values of humanistic psychology: deep down where it counts, I, the Coaching Supervisee & their Client(s) are all fundamentally ‘OK’. I seek to encourage dialogue, practice and professional development from a place outside the toxic and endlessly ineffective ‘drama triangle’ of ‘victim - persecutor - rescuer’. Essentially, my whole approach is underpinned by the notion of ‘trust’ in the Client’s own wisdom & the ability of the Coach to learn to facilitate Client understanding of this wisdom.

In current parlance, I work as a Coaching Supervisor from the ‘Relational Depth’ approach. I am particularly interested in helping Coach Supervisees to recognise they are developing a Craft, which utilises the self as a resource, rather than attempting to perfect a range of interventions as an expert skill based practitioner.

I utilise two key supervision models in my practice: the HAWKINS & SHOHET ‘matrix’ or ‘seven eyed supervision’ model (1989 – revised 2006) and the ‘5 stage cyclical’ model developed by PAGE & WOSKET (1994 – revised 2001).

I focus on issues of Client

best interest, the Coach’s technique and professional practice, as well as the dynamics of the Coach-Client relationship, where issues of projection, transference, counter-transference and material arising within the ‘unconscious field’ can often be identified and explored, in order to bring greater understanding and effectiveness to the work of the Coach.

Overall I advocate and uphold the ‘Primary Foci of Supervision’ as outlined by Hawkins & Shohet:

·         To provide a regular space for the Coach to reflect upon the ‘content & process’ of their work;

·         To develop understanding & skills within the work;

·         To receive both ‘content & process’ feedback;

·         To be validated, supported & challenged as a Coach;

·         To ensure that as a person & Practitioner one is not left to carry, unnecessarily, the difficulties of the work (including problems & projections) alone;

·         To have space to explore and express personal distress, restimulation, transference or counter transference that may be brought up by the work;

·         To plan & utilise  professional and personal resources better;

·         To be proactive rather than reactive;

·         And to ensure quality of the work.

The ‘seven eyed’ model covers: a focus on the Client and what and how they present; exploration of the strategies and interventions used by the Coach; focusing on the relationship between the Client and the Coach; focusing on the Coach as Supervisee; the Supervisor focusing on their own process; focusing on the wider contexts in which the work happens…. Then integrating the processes and linking the model to a developmental perspective.

I offer 1:1 Supervision on the basis of a minimum 1 ½ Hour Session every month, in line with probable future AC requirements for Coaches working towards AC accreditation or already Accredited. Coach Supervisees carrying substantial caseloads or particularly difficult cases should expect to require & negotiate supervision contact higher than the 1 ½ hour ‘baseline’.  [Please contact me for further information on Group Based Coaching Supervision].

Coaching Supervision is usually provided at our premises either in Skipton or Silsden.

Please contact me for details of Work Based Coaching Supervision and Group Based Coaching Supervision.

Fees:

(As from 1st October 2010) £90 to £130 per hour, for Coaches working with Private Clients only;  £180 to £260 per hour for Coaches working with Corporate Clients; £46 per hour for Coaching Course Students. Fees may be negotiable in circumstances of significant financial difficulty. I work to an appointment system wherever possible.
